Q & A with Brent McMahon

  • Biggest obstacle/challenge
  • Racing at the Olympics having been out with an IT Band injury for two months. Knowing I was injured and not fit at a big race was very difficult.
  • Superstitions
  • None, they just create an opportunity for something to go wrong.
  • Nobody knows…
  • If I said something then it wouldn't be a fact that no one knows. But I do have one and you will never know.
  • Biggest athletic accomplishment
  • Making the 2004 Athens Olympic Games Team. I worked hard for a number of years to get the experience and ability to race at the top level of ITU racing to qualify for the Games. It wasn't until the last six months before the Games that I really came on strong and raced three weekends in a row before the final cut off to qualify for the Games. I raced the first weekend in the Caribbean, the next in Mexico and then the World Championships in Portugal where I managed to come 27th to qualify a second spot for Canada. I then had to go to one last World Cup race in South Korea three weeks later to meet the Canadian standard where I was 8th. It was a challenging process but tested all my mental and physical abilities.
  • Least favorite thing about training
  • Having to go riding for 4-5 hours in the pouring rain at 4 degrees Celsius. It is miserable but it makes you tough.
